What are Alternative and Complementary Medicines? |
Alternative, or Complementary Medicines
and therapies in effect are the same, it is how they are
used that differentiates between the two. The most
common forms of alternative, or complementary medicines
are acupuncture, homeopathic remedies, herbal medicines,
yoga, vitamin supplements, massage therapy,
hypnotherapy, meditation, and Chinese medicines. Other
therapies that give alternative medicine a bad image
include iridology, cymatics, gem therapy, electro-magnet
therapy, and colour therapy.
Alternative Medicine
When these unconventional medicines are used IN
PLACE OF conventional medicines such as pills,
chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and surgery it is
referred to as Alternative Medicine. For example if your
doctor diagnoses high cholesterol and prescribes tablets
and a more sensible diet, but you chose to use a Chinese
herb instead, then you are using an alternative
medicine.
Complementary Medicines
When these
alternative medicines are used ALONGSIDE conventional
medicines, in a supporting role, it is referred to as
Complementary Medicine. For example, when a cancer
patient receives chemotherapy to fight the cancer cells,
and massage therapy and vitamin supplements as a support
mechanism throughout the treatment, it would be referred
to a complementary medicine. The aim being that a well
nourished and relaxed patient is more able to deal with
the treatments ahead. Complementary Medicine is often
referred to as a way of empowering the patient during
the course of their illness, and eventual recovery.
Because of the
increasing popularity of alternative medicines and
therapies - nearly half of the population is either
currently using, or has used alternative medicine
treatments for medical problems - doctors, hospitals,
and medical schools are now starting to recognise
alternative medicines primarily in a complementary role.
Complementary medicine is a huge and profitable
industry. Every year, in the US alone, about $12 billion
is spent on these therapies, and medicines.
