OVERALL OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this CME activity, through the use of clinical vignettes emphasizing Guidelines and Evidence-Based Medicine, the physician or healthcare provider should be able to formulate a differential, make a diagnosis and develop a plan for the prevention and/or therapeutic management of the various disorders presented.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES FOR EACH TOPIC

TOPIC 1: Acute Otitis Media: Of Pathogens and Patients - Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:

1. Recognize trends in resistance in pediatric pathogens. 
2. Identify key recommendations in AAP/AAFP guidelines. 
3. Appropriately prescribe empiric antibiotic therapy.

TOPIC 2: Migraine Headache - Update on Diagnosis & Treatment - Upon completion of this session, using the International Headache Society and US Headache Consortium guidelines as well as the National Guideline Clearing House and the evidence-based reports from Clinical Evidence, the participant should be able to:

1. Discuss the process for evaluating a patient with possible migraine headaches. 
2. Discuss the advantages of supportive therapy and lifestyle changes to treat migraine headaches. 
3. Compare and contrast the pharmacologic options for treating an acute migraine headache. 
4. Identify when prophylactic therapy is appropriate for patients with recurrent migraine headaches.

TOPIC 3: Concussions - Who Plays and Who Stays - Upon completion of this session, using clinical evidence, the participant should be able to:

1. Review the newest Consensus Statement. 
2. Discuss the definition and causes of a concussion. 
3. Discuss the guidelines for an adequate evaluation and decisions regarding the ability to return to play.

TOPIC 4: Community Acquired Pneumonia and Respiratory Tract Infections - Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:

1. Describe the epidemiology of community acquired pneumonia. 
2. Recognize the clinical manifestations and likely pathogens in specific patient populations. 
3. Discuss the differential diagnosis and specific management when you make the diagnosis of community acquired pneumonia. 
4. Appraise the rising incidence of resistance and utilize alternative therapies when indicated. 
5. Review the role of antibiotics in bronchitis.

TOPIC 5: Fever in Infants - Upon completion of this session, and using the evidence-based guidelines from EBM publications, the participant should be able to:

1. Identify the common bacterial pathogens associated with fever in infants < 8 weeks of age as compared to older infants. 
2. Discuss the rationale for current diagnostic evaluation in these patients. 
3. Apply the appropriate treatment options for this patient population.

TOPIC 6: Contact Dermatitis - Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:

1. Describe the complexity of testing for identification of allergies in contact dermatitis. 
2. Identify and treat poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac. 
3. Recognize common contactants seen in the office setting.

TOPIC 7: Herpes Simplex and Zoster; Lichen Planus - Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:

1. Differentiate herpes simplex and herpes zoster based on morphology and distribution of lesions and laboratory testing. 
2. Recognize the varied manifestations and complications of herpes zoster. 
3. Outline an appropriate treatment plan for herpes simplex and herpes zoster. 
4. Appreciate the cutaneous spectrum of lichen planus.
