This programme looks at zonation on exposed and sheltered rocky shores and the environmental factors affecting them. Special adaptations developed by organisms in this hostile environment are of particular interest. The programme includes material shot on location in Cardigan Bay and underwater footage to demonstrate processes such as filter feeding.

Sand dune formation and succession are looked at in some detail in this programme which was filmed at Ynyslas on the coast of Mid Wales. Particular attention is given to the special adaptations of primary colonisers such as Sea Rocket and Marram Grass. The problems associated with human erosion and dune management are highlighted and provide a valuable starting point for follow-up work.

In this programme different types of woodland are introduced. A more detailed study of a British deciduous woodland illustrates ecological cycles such as nutrient cycles and succession over a longer period of time. Food chains and pyramids of biomass illustrate the inter-relationship of organisms in this ecosystem.

Introduced by Dr David Bellamy, this series of programmes looks at the ecology of four important ecosystems: the seashore, sand dunes, woodlands and freshwater. Each of the programmes focuses on the relationships between organisms and studies their importance in the functioning of each system. Highlighting human pressures such as pollution, erosion and deforestation, the programmes also introduce conservation and ecological management strategies.
