Dr Khanh is a paediatric neurologist with great experience of polio. On this film he presents two infants, the first a 13-month old boy with pure motor paralysis due to classical acute poliomyelitis, and asymmetrical paralysis of the lower limbs; and the second a three year old boy with symmetrical distal limb weakness due to Guillain-Barr syndrome. The clinical features are well presented, and the differential diagnosis and management fully discussed. The film concludes with new discussions on immunisation strategies against poliomyelitis in developing and developed countries, and the relative merits and risks of live oral versus inactive polio vaccines. 2004
