OVERALL OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this CME activity, through the use of clinical vignettes emphasizing Guidelines and Evidence-Based Medicine, the physician or healthcare provider should be able to formulate a differential, make a diagnosis and develop a plan for the prevention and/or therapeutic management of the various disorders presented.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES FOR EACH TOPIC
TOPIC 1: The Knee: A Critical Evaluation of Two Common Problems - Upon completion of the session, the participant should be able to:
1. Explain the anatomy, body-mechanics, and pathophysiology of iliotibial band friction syndrome.
2. Discuss treatment strategies for ITB including training changes, medication and specific exercises.
3. Describe the anatomy and physiology of the meniscus and how this relates to tears and their treatment.
4. Discuss important points in history, physical and testing that lead to a diagnosis of damaged meniscus.
5. Discuss the benefits and implications of surgical vs. conservative management of meniscal tear.
TOPIC 2: Osteoporosis: Diagnosis & Treatment - Upon completion of this session, using the USPSTF and NOF recommendations as well as the Cochrane Abstract Database, the participant should be able to:
1. Identify the patient at risk for an osteoporotic fracture.
2. Discuss the current methods for evaluating patients at risk for osteoporosis.
3. Describe the therapeutic classes of medications, their indications and their side effects.
4. Discuss the therapeutic role of repeating the DXA scan in patients treated for osteoporosis.
TOPIC 3: Rheumatologic Procedures - Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
1. Summarize techniques and indications for intraarticular and soft tissue injections in rheumatology.
TOPIC 4: Common Fractures - Upon completion of this session, using analyses of clinical evidence, the participant should be able to:
1. Review bone metabolism and repair.
2. Discuss common fractures.
3. Become familiar with the various treatment recommendations presented.
TOPIC 5: Office Orthopedics in the Elderly Patient - Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
1. List the common causes of acute low back pain in the elderly.
2. Describe the symptoms and treatment of spinal stenosis.
3. List the common causes of neck pain in the elderly.
TOPIC 6: Interesting Pediatric Cases: When a Long Day Becomes a Pain in the..."Back" - Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
1. Identify the important clinical features of diagnoses associated with back pain.
2. Generate a differential diagnosis for each described clinical presentation.
3. Develop an initial evaluation and treatment plan for children presenting with back pain.
TOPIC 7: Pediatric Orthopedic Pitfalls - Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
1. Discuss the unique responses of the pediatric musculoskeletal system to forces.
2. Initiate management for common pediatric extremity emergencies.
3. Correlate mechanism of injury, age and anatomy with common and uncommon extremity injuries.
4. Avoid traps that obscure subtle pediatric orthopedic injuries.
