A differential diagnostic reference
for physicians and students of dermatology – the first
to focus on geriatric dermatoses
-
Highly illustrated reference with more than 100 color
illustrations for ease of use
-
A visual encyclopedia of geriatric dermatoses that can
be used on rounds or in a reference environment
A greater percentage of the population
is now in the over-65 age group, with this trend
expected to continue well into the 21st century.
Consequently, geriatric dermatology is a specialty that
is receiving particular attention, not only in terms of
patient numbers but also the scope of treatment, with
more treatment regimens becoming available to
dermatologists.
Diagnosis of Aging Skin Diseases
provides the clinician with an encyclopedia of geriatric
dermatoses that can be used on rounds or in a reference
environment. It provides a structured illustrated review
of the various lesions encountered, which will make this
an invaluable reference resource for all physicians
dealing with older skin. It also places special emphasis
on illnesses originating in other organ systems that are
made manifest on the skin and often complicate the
diagnostic and therapeutic picture.
The manifestations of dermatologic
disease in the geriatric population are often subtly
different to those in younger age groups. Using a
practical and clinical approach, Dr Norman and his
contributor panel of leading authorities in the field
have compiled a vital reference for dermatology fellows
and residents, geriatricians and related clinicians to
identify dermatoses specific to the aging population.
Contents:
The Demographic Imperative.Structure and Function
of Aging Skin. Photo-aging. Aging and the Skin: The
Geriatrician’s Perspective. White and Red Lesions of the

Sunlight,
Vitamin D, and Skin Cancer

The goal of this volume is to
comprehensively cover a highly readable overview on our
present knowledge of positive and negative effects of
UV-exposure, with a focus on vitamin D and skin cancer.
Topics that are discussed in-depth by leading
researchers and clinicians range from the newest
findings in endocrinology, epidemiology, histology,
photobiology, immunology, cytogenetics and molecular
pathology to new concepts for prophylaxis and treatment.
Experts in the field as well as health care
professionals not intimately involved in these
specialized areas are provided with the most significant
and timely information related to these topics. It is
the aim of this book to summarize essential up-to-date
information for every clinician or scientist interested
in how to balance between positive and negative effects
of UV-exposure to minimize the risks of developing
vitamin D deficiency and skin cancer. UV-exposure
represents the most important risk factor for the
development of non-melanoma skin cancer. Additionally,
assessment of sun exposure parameters has consistently
shown an association between the development of
malignant melanoma and short-term intense UV-exposure,
particularly burning in childhood. As a consequence,
protection of the skin from UV-exposure is an integral
part of skin cancer prevention programs. However, more
chronic less intense UV-exposure has not been found to
be a risk factor for melanoma and in fact has been found
in some studies to be protective. Moreover, 90% of all
requisite vitamin D is formed within the skin through
the action of the sun a serious problem for a connection
between vitamin D deficiency and various types of cancer
(e.g., colon-, prostate- and breast cancer) has been
demonstrated in a large number of studies. Hence, the
association between vitamin D deficiency and various
internal malignancies has now opened a debate among
dermatologists and other clinicians how to balance
between positive and negative effects of solar and
artificial UV-exposure.

No other book currently available
specifically addresses complications in cutaneous
surgery
-
Lavishly illustrated with more than
230 figures
-
Relevant to a number of specialist
disciplines from dermatology to otolaryngology
The demand for outpatient cutaneous
surgery procedures has increased at a rapid rate over
the last several decades. Cosmetic, oncology, and
reconstructive procedures are being performed by primary
care physicians and a variety of specialists in
different disciplines such as dermatology, plastic
surgery, ophthalmology, and otolaryngology. As the
number of cutaneous surgery procedures rises, so will
the rate of complications, which are inevitable and
occur even with the most skilled, careful, and
meticulous surgeons.
In the practice of medicine, we often
learn more from our complications than our triumphs. The
authors of each chapter of Complications in Cutaneous
Surgery were recruited to contribute based on their
experience and respective areas of expertise. As of this
writing, no other book specifically addresses
complications in cutaneous surgery. The goal of this
volume is to provide a comprehensive text that will
enable the practicing physician to formulate a
preoperative strategy to not only prevent complications
before they occur but also to properly diagnose and
manage complications when they arise, allowing the
physician to provide optimal care to the patient.
Contents:
Section I: Acute Surgical Complication. Preoperative
Evaluation. Acute Emergencies. Nerve Injury. Hemorrhagic
Complications. Wound Infection. Dehiscence. Necrosis.
Section II: Chronic Surgical Complications.
Hypertrophic Scars And Keloids. Free Margin Distortion.
Scar Revision And Camouflage. Miscellaneous Surgical
Complications. Psychological Complications.
Section III: Complications of Cosmetic Procedures.-
Ablative and Nonablative Lasers. Vascular, Pigment, and
Hair Removal Lasers. Dermabrasion and Chemical Peels.

This best selling text has been
completely revised and refreshed in the fourth edition.
The authors aim to enthuse family doctors (for whom they
are primarily writing) to enjoy the challenge of
diagnosing and treating skin conditions.
Clinical Dermatology contains over 500
high quality pictures and diagrams matched with many
colourful phrases to illustrate and entertain as it
teaches. It has established a reputation as a ‘way of
learning’ and as a cogent overview of the subject for
the aspiring specialist. Readers are guided through the
maze that too often lies between the presenting skin
complaint and its final diagnosis and treatment. The
authors have created an easily read text with enough
detail to clarify the subject but not enough to obscure
it.
This fourth edition contains new
chapters on racially pigmented skin, dermatology of
different age groups and cosmetic dermatology. Relevant
internet sites are now clearly highlighted at the end of
each chapter and the comprehensive formulary has been
updated.
