Hepatitis B is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in many parts of the world, with its vertical transmission from mother to child, and its capacity to cause cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Immune tolerance, especially in the young plays a major role in chronicity, and ultimately fatal complications. The cases and discussion cover many of the important advances in its understanding and treatment including the use of antiviral drugs, and immunisation. Hepatitis E on the other hand is caused by a food-born RNA virus and the case shown on this film was in a patient with chronic hepatitis B. 2005
