OVERALL OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this CME activity, through the use of clinical vignettes emphasizing Guidelines and Evidence-Based Medicine, the physician or healthcare provider should be able to formulate a differential, make a diagnosis and develop a plan for the prevention and/or therapeutic management of the various disorders presented.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES FOR EACH TOPIC
TOPIC 1: Routine Adult Care - Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
1. Identify the current primary care guidelines for recommended screening tests for adults.
2. List the various recommended immunizations for adults.
TOPIC 2: Treating Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus - Upon completion of this session, using the American Diabetes Association and the European Association for the Study of Diabetes guidelines as well as the Cochrane Abstract Database, the participant should be able to:
1. Describe the therapeutic goals in treating Type 2 Diabetes and their medical rationale.
2. Compare and contrast the oral agents for treating Type 2 Diabetes.
3. Identify the need for insulin in Type 2 Diabetes and list the therapeutic insulin options.
TOPIC 3: Drugs and the Nervous System - Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
1. Identify the common effects of prescribed drugs on the nervous system.
2. Identify the common effects of illicit drugs on the nervous system.
3. Recognize the common neurologic complications of alcoholism.
4. Recognize the common neurologic side effects of antidopaminergic medication.
TOPIC 4: Soft Tissue and Bone Infections - Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
1. Identify an approach to making the diagnosis of common skin and soft tissue infections.
2. Recognize common infections to include streptococcal and staphylococcal infections and necrotizing fasciitis, diabetic foot infections, bite wound infections and bone and joint infections.
3. Apply appropriate treatment and management of these commonly seen infections and decide when specialist referral is indicated.
TOPIC 5: Laboratory and Radiological Tests in Rheumatology - Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
1. Appreciate the importance of synovial fluid analysis.
2. Appreciate the use and limitations of laboratory testing.
TOPIC 6: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD): Evaluation and Treatment - Upon completion of this session, using the ACCP GOLD guidelines, the AACVPR practice guidelines and the evidence-based reports from Clinical Evidence, the participant should be able to:
1. List the diagnostic criteria for COPD.
2. Describe the natural history of COPD and the influence of smoking cessation.
3. Compare and contrast the pharmacologic treatment options to reduce morbidity associated with COPD.
4. Describe the usual follow-up assessments of patients diagnosed with COPD.
TOPIC 7: Depression in Primary Care - Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
1. Explain the incidence and prevalence of anxiety and depression.
2. Recognize the signs and symptoms associated with anxiety and depression.
3. Enumerate and describe treatment strategies available for these disorders.
