Falciparum malaria is a continuing scourge throughout the tropical world, and a disease with which all doctors should be thoroughly familiar, in these days of extensive air travel. Dr Arnold, was a leading researcher in clinical management of malaria, and is filmed with staff at the Centre for Tropical Diseases in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, where important research in the use of the Artimisinin derivatives, derived from a traditional Chinese remedy Qing Hao, was conducted. First some cases are presented, including one with cerebral malaria (Glasgow Coma score test demonstrated); then the technique of diagnosis including staining of thin and thick blood films is shown, and the parasites of P.falciparum and vivax illustrated. There is then a full discussion with Dr Arnold, with the life cycle of the parasite well illustrated, and treatment and prevention discussed, followed by an updated discussion with world expert in Malaria Professor Sornchai Loowaresan on its prevention and treatment. 2004
