OVERALL OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this CME activity, through the use of clinical vignettes emphasizing Guidelines and Evidence-Based Medicine, the physician or healthcare provider should be able to formulate a differential, make a diagnosis and develop a plan for the prevention and/or therapeutic management of the various disorders presented.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES FOR EACH TOPIC
TOPIC 1: Case – Save A Heart Today™ - Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
1. Recognize true diaphoresis and determine that immediate action to rule out life-threatening etiologies is necessary.
2. Employ the potentially life-saving measure of advising patients to chew a 325mg aspirin at the onset of ACS.
3. Assess and detect commonly missed atypical ACS symptoms, especially when evaluating an elderly patient.
TOPIC 2: Dyslipidemia - Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
1. Apply recent changes to ATP III lipid management guidelines to their clinical practice.
2. Recognize secondary causes of dyslipidemia.
3. Describe treatment strategies for various dyslipidemic states.
TOPIC 3: Evaluation and Treatment of Hypertensive Patients - Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
1. Describe non-pharmacologic methods to manage hypertension.
2. Compare and contrast the advantages and disadvantages of antihypertensive medications and their compelling indications.
3. Identify the therapeutic goal for different patient populations and the combination therapies to achieve that goal.
TOPIC 4: Coronary Artery Disease - Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
1. Describe the common presenting symptom complexes of patients.
2. Describe the diagnostic evaluation of a patient with chest pain.
3. Enumerate current medication and surgical treatment options.
TOPIC 5: Syncope: Which Test Is Better in the Fainting Patient? - Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
1. Discuss the causes and natural history of syncope.
2. Apply bedside tilt and tilt table testing.
3. Define treatment strategies for orthostatic hypotension.
TOPIC 6: Obesity - Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
1. State the epidemiology of obesity in America and the health risks associated with obesity.
2. Assess patients that are obese and that are in need of treatment.
3. Recommend and utilize various treatment options available, including diet, exercise, medications, and bariatric surgery.
TOPIC 7: Congestive Heart Failure - Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
1. Recognize the presenting signs and symptoms of congestive heart failure.
2. Formulate a rapid treatment plan and reassess response to therapy.
3. Initiate non-invasive ventilation in appropriate candidates.
4. Discuss the renal dysfunction in CHF.
TOPIC 8: Smoking Cessation - Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
1. Recognize the role of smoking in disease etiology.
2. Identify smoking cessation techniques which can be utilized in their practice setting.
