The dorsal aspect of the vertebral column separates the deep compartment from the vertebral canal. It includes the laminae together with their projections (the spinous and inferior articular processes), and extends laterally to the zygapophyseal (facet) joints. The lateral margin of the deep compartment is represented (in the thoracic zone) by a line along the angles of the ribs.
