The diaphragm is shaped like an inverted "J" attaching anteriorly to the xiphisternum (located at the vertebral level of T9) while posteriorly it extends tot he vertebral level of T12 to encroach on the posterior abdominal wall. Structures transmitted between the thorax and abdomen pass via major and minor openings in the diaphragm. The major openings primarily transmit structures between thoracic and abdominal cavities. The minor openings (which are located around its periphery) primarily transmit structures between thoracic and abdominal walls.
