The postnatal period of growth and development occurs until maturity. Infancy is the first year (including the neonatal phase for the first four weeks after birth). The neonate is a full-term infant, delivered between 37 and 42 weeks. Neonates delivered before 37 weeks are "preterm" (or premature) while those delivered after 42 weeks are "post-term". The neonatal phase is associated with rapid maturation and growth of all organ systems.
